Prayer and Fasting
Has the NIV removed half your Armor?

By Keith Dotzler

Fast, fasted, and fasting occur a total of 20 times in the NT of the NIV. Those same three words occur 42 times in the NT of the KJV. Is the KJV guilty of ADDING to the word of God, or is the NIV guilty of TAKING AWAY from the word of God? CLEARLY, both cannot be the TRUE words of God...clearly, that is, to those with eyes to see! Let us examine three Scriptures, and find out who the guilty party is!

"Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Matt 17:21 (KJV)

"Omitted" Matt 17:21 (NIV)

Matt 17:21 has been removed entirely from the NIV. They justify this omission on the basis of the following mss: Aleph(though it was corrected later to include the verse...thus making its testimony unsure), B, Q, and the cursive mss 0281, 33, 579, 892, and a "few" others. Latin mss "e" and "ff"(after being altered by the first corrector) also omit the verse, as well as the Syriac Curetonian, Sinaitic Syriac, Boharic(divided tradition), and Sahidic versions. NO church fathers are cited as evidence for the removal of Matt 17:21 in the current critical apparatus of Nestle/Aland.

That small group of witnesses that omit the verse are up against the following FOR the verse's inclusion in the Sacred Text:

Aleph(second corrector), C, D, L, W, families 1 AND 13, and the MAJORITY TEXT(5000+ mss). Early versions include the Old Latin, Vulgate, the Peshitta(150 a.d.), Harklean, Middle Egyptian, Boharic(divided tradition), Coptic, Armenian, Georgian, Aethiopic, and the Slavonic. Church fathers who witness to the authenticity of the verse are Origen, Athanasius, Basil, Chrysostom, the Opus imperf., the Syriac Clement, John Damascene, Tertullian, Ambrose, Hillary, Juvencus, Augustine, Maximus Taur, and by the Syriac version of the Canons of Eusebius.

Thus the evidence FOR Matt 17:21 is vastly greater than that against it! Comparing ONLY the Majority text to the mss used as the basis of the NIV's omission of Matt 17:21, the result is 5000 to nine!!! I thought the textual scholars "weighed" the evidence for a reading??? If that be the case, why have they removed Matt 17:21 from the NIV with such a minute group of witnesses? I'll tell you why, it is because they revere only TWO mss above all others! The Alexandrians are quick to disagree with that statement, but I challenge any and all of them to give me just ONE New Testament reading in the NIV that is NOT supported by Aleph, B, or BOTH!!!

I'd be willing to bet my LIFE, that were Aleph and B to include Matt 17:21 in the text, so would the NIV...hence the "eclectic text," used by all the new version publishers, has been hijacked from the beginning by only 2 mss, with NO exceptions that I am aware of! If Aleph doesn't support them, they look to B...and vice versa. NEVER will you find a reading(or lack of one) in the NIV that isn't "supported" by Aleph and B!

Today's "scholars" are repeating the history of the events that surrounded the creation of the Revised Version of 1881! TWO men, out of all that were involved in "revising" the KJV, took total control of the meetings! So much so, that one of the members quit after only ONE meeting! Westcott and Hort...Aleph and B...birds of a feather. The Revised Version was the product of TWO men, following TWO mss...Aleph and B. History is repeating itself. Aleph and B are STILL the "god's" of the "scholars." It kind of reminds me of the Jews. The continued rebellion of the Israelites after they witnessed the parting of the Red Sea, after they witnessed the earth opening up and swallowing those who were not on the Lord's side, after they witnessed the miracles God performed through Moses, after they witnessed the parting of the Jordan...after they witnessed ALL OF THAT, they STILL continued to rebel!!! So it is with the new bibles...and the Christians who "use" them! The KJV has been THE standard for the last 400 years. Everyone knows this, yet they CONTINUE to pump out version after version after version...all of them claiming to be "easier to understand," and "based on the best manuscripts," but have not the fruit that the beloved Authorized King James Version has produced! When will Christians, like the Jews, LEARN THEIR LESSON?!?!?! You cannot dumb down the Bible to the slang of the day! You must first be SAVED(those who aren't are spiritually discerned), then you must be taught by the Holy Spirit, who guides into ALL truth, the glorious and wondrous truths that are to be found in the word of God! "Desire the sincere milk of the word..." We are NOT to desire stale milk, i.e. "easier to understand" perversions! We must come up to the level of God's word, not vice versa! Take heed!

The Revised Version of 1881 quickly fell out of use. God's people recognized the corruptions, and rejected it as a result! Today, every new bible that is based on the Nestle/Aland/UBS text is following the same text that the Revised Version followed...only the Christians of THIS generation have been numbed to the truth. Some say the more technology advances, the smarter we get. I think it's the exact opposite! We, collectively, are getting STUPID!!! Simple truths of only 100 years ago are disregarded by the more "enlightened" boasters of today's world! "It's not a corruption, it's a 'variant'...all bibles contain the 'message' of what God said..." is the nonsense spewing forth from the mouths of our Christian contemporaries!

Just as homosexuality has been accepted as an "alternate lifestyle" today, so too have the corruptions in God's word been relegated to "alternate readings." Both terms are void of any accountability to God. If someone is born gay, it's not their fault. God made them that way, so they aren't sinning against Him when they do things that ought to be done between husband and wife alone! If Alternate readings are not corruptions, then God obviously wasn't worried about His exact words, thus cannot hold us accountable for not following them(Matt 4:4). They have disappeared forever. No one knows which words are the EXACT words of God. Every scholar is translating according to that which is right in his own eyes! Bring on the next "easier to understand" perversion!

On to Mark 9:28,29...

"And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." Mark 9:28-29 (KJV)

"After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, 'Why couldn't we drive it out?' He replied, 'This kind can come out only by prayer.'" Mark 9:28-29 (NIV)

Fasting is mentioned WITH prayer 11 times in the KJV, but only 8 times in the NIV! I have been noticing a very interesting pattern, as I've been studying for this article. In every instance but one, where fasting has been removed from the NIV, it is in the context of withstanding the devil!!! Does this not shock any of you who use the NIV? Here are the verses from the KJV, where you will not find "fasting" mentioned WITH PRAYER in the NIV:

Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Matt 17:21 (KJV)

And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29 (KJV)

And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, Acts 10:30 (KJV)

Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 1 Cor 7:5 (KJV)

In ALL of those verses, in the NIV, "fasting" has been removed! Is it just a coincidence that all of those verses, but one, deal with casting out devils and withstanding the devil? I think not!

Back to the text of this part of the study...Mark 9:29--

The evidence used for the removal of "and fasting" from the text of the NIV is less than that used for the removal of Matt 17:21! Here it is:

Aleph, B, 0274, 2427, and Latin ms k. How's that for weighing the evidence! A grand total of only FIVE MANUSCRIPTS exclude the phrase!!! Supporting the phrase in the KJV are:

Aleph(2nd corrector, so again its testimony is unsure), p45(apparent reading), A, C, D, L, W, Q, Y, families 1 and 13, cursive 33(the QUEEN of cursives, no less!), the MAJORITY text, the Old Latin, Vulgate, Harklean, and Coptic versions. In other words, WHY ON EARTH DID THE NIV REMOVE THE PHRASE!!! Does someone WANT you to go up against our adversary with only half your Armor? Who do you suppose would want such a thing(Yea, hath God said?)?

Our last Scripture will be 1 Cor 7:5. I will post the text once more, along with how the NIV renders it:

"Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency." 1 Cor 7:5 (KJV)

"Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control." 1 Cor 7:5 (NIV)

Once again, we see that someone wants us to forget about fasting, when it comes to withstanding the devil! Now some may point out that the NIV talks about going without food, thus does not diminish from the doctrine of fasting. Au contraire friends! Biblical fasting does not only involve abstaining from eating, but from sexual intimacy between spouses, as well as from everyday pleasures, such as sports, TV, etc!

"Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?" Isaiah 58:3-6 (KJV)

The saying is true..."what today's version sets off in brackets, tomorrow's will omit." I would like to add to this saying. "The doctrines that today's version omits in part, tomorrow's will omit entirely!" Try looking up fast, fasting, and fasted in the New Testament of the NCV(New Century Version). Those words have been TOTALLY ELIMINATED!!! They have replaced those 3 words with "gone without food," "stop eating," "refuse to eat or drink," and other ridiculous phrases, which destroy the Biblical meaning of a fast! NONE of those replacement phrases imply any sort of spiritual reason for the fast, nor do they hint of abstaining from sex and other pleasures, which is a TRUE, BIBLICAL fast!

The evidence against the phrase "and fasting" in 1 Cor 7:5 is:

p11(in part), Aleph, A, B, C, D, F, G, P, Y, 6, 33, 81, 104, 630, 1175, 1739, 1881, 2464, and others, all the Latin mss, as well as the Coptic version. Early church fathers who omit the phrase are Clement of alexandria and Epiphanius.

In support of the phrase are: Aleph(2nd corrector), the MAJORITY text, and ALL of the Syriac versions. The way the NA/UBS text has the evidence listed, you would think the KJV reading is in the minority. Such is NOT the case though! Those who worship Aleph and B look at the MAJORITY text as ONE witness, rather than 5000+, and they look at the Alexandrian mss as individual witnesses, thus they have created a pseudo-majority in support of removing "and fasting" from the text of 1 Cor 7:5! My how they deceive so easily!

In conclusion, the NIV is committing a serious offence against God(Rev 22:18,19), and the Christians who buy their perversions, by removing "fasting" from the text, and removing it from the places we need it the MOST...i.e. in the Scriptures that show us how to withstand the devil!!! Prayer AND fasting belong together. Prayer is not enough when facing the adversary. Don't buy the line that the doctrine can be found elsewhere friend. That is nothing but a smokescreen put out by the Bible publishers, pastors, keep you spending your hard-earned money on their PRODUCT! The love of money...shame on them!
